Many home re-modelers, when they first buy a miter, don’t want to have the extra expense of buying one of the miter saw stands. You’ve probably even seen some weekend re-modelers out in their driveway, with the saw down on the concrete, making their cuts.
If their back survives the first few weekends, they may keep doing it for a long time. But most of them quickly realize how hard using a miter saw on the ground truly is, and seek a solution. Sadly, many of them move to their next strategy of saving money, and pull an old table out of storage, and try to rig up a way to use the miter saw.

While this may work adequately for some people, you will probably start noticing how hard it is to move the wood around on your table, especially the larger boards. Good quality miter saw stands normally have rollers to make it easy to get the wood into the exact position you desire. Of course, you could attempt to modify your old table, to add some rollers. The problem, you’ve already wasted much of your valuable time building, modify, and adjusting a cutting setup, which you could have avoided with one of the inexpensive miter saw stands. You may have already sunk dollars and more wasted time, which could have all been saved by purchasing a low cost stand.
Once you realize how much money and time you wasted on modifying the table, and in making bad cuts, plus endangering your own safety, you will see how good an investment miter saw stands.
The painful truth of this story is that many of us weekend carpenters and craftsman try to save a few dollars and building miter saw stands, or improvising. Once you look at the miter saw stands, and make a purchase, you will be more productive, much safer, and you will quit making so many inaccurate cuts trying to use improvised equipment. It also took care of those heavier longer pieces, with the rollers on both ends. You could have saved the cost of a couple the miter saw stands in those two weekends with the lost time, and lost materials.
That doesn’t even include the benefit of being able to move it quickly. Many miter saw stands have wheels on one end, allowing you to easily move the stand and the miter saw to another location, using it where you are working, instead of the constant running back and forth to the driveway.
The only problem you have left when using your new miter saw stands? Every time you pull it out of the garage, you will remember your wasted time and effort.
